International seminars by BIOMATCELL & BIOSUM

On behalf of BIOSUM Interdisciplinary Research School in Biomaterials and BIOMATCELL VINN Excellence Center of Biomaterials and Cell Therapy, we are pleased to announce our international seminar series on Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

For autumn 2010, the following distinguished professors will guest our facilities:

Professor Shohei Kasugai has a background in development of biocompatible implants, therapeutic drugs for osteopenia and periodontal tissue regeneration. He is Professor and Chairman of Department of Oral Implantology and Regenerative Dental Medicine; Director of Dental Implant Clinic, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU). He was awarded DDS and PhD degrees in. He was a post-doctoral fellow in University of Toronto from 1989 to 1991. In the 1990s, he and his colleagues developed bone marrow cell culture system, which can be applied to evaluate dental implant materials and to regenerate bone. He was previously an Associate Professor of Pharmacological Department in TMDU developing therapeutic drugs for osteoporosis, which stimulates bone formation. In 2000 he became Professor and Chairman of Oral Implantology. Professor Kasugai´s research is currently focusing on dental implant and the related bone tissue engineering.

Professor Tadashi Kokubo’s background is in bioglass research and inorganic precipitation from SBF of calcium phosphates (CaP) onto biomaterial surfaces. The original recipe for simulated body fluid (SBF) emanates from his group. Professor Kokubo is also known worldwide for his achievements within bone anchored biomaterials published in the groundbraking articles in JACS in 1994: “Bonelike hydroxyapatite induction by a gel-derived titania on a titanium substrate” and “Apatite coating on organic polymers by a biomimetic process.

Professor Tatsuo Suda, Japan, has made extremely important scientific discoveries and played an extraordinary role in bone research. He has an impressive scientific background in the research on Vitamin D3 and its role in bone. In 1971, he isolated and identified 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1alpha,25(OH)2D3] (1971). After this, his research about Vitamin D3 continued with the synthesis of 1alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 and its clinical application, (1974-1981), the discovery of cell differentiation-inducing activity of 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 (1981), molecular cloning of renal 25(OH)D3-1alpha-hydroxylase (CYP27B1) (1997) and molecular cloning of osteoclast differentiation factor (ODF/RANKL). Professor Tatsuo Suda is now active as visiting Professor of Saitama Medical University, Emeritus Professor of Showa University.

  • New Course: Education- facilitating creativity

    [22 Aug 2012] The idea of this course is to educate the participants as facilitators, and let them facilitate cooperation, teamwork and creative forum.

  • Communication Course

    [22 Aug 2012] The course aims to give the participants a better understanding for and ability to "communicate on the hearer¿s terms". This course includes both lectures and practice on stylistics, rhetoric and oral presentations. The goal is that all participants will be able to describe their work in a clear way so the listener can understand and reflect.
