Biomaterials from idea to market - 6 hp

The course will be facilitated in English.

The course is organised by the biomaterials research school BIOSUM but is open also to other students that fulfil the course prerequisites and are eligible to the third cycle.

To be eligible for the course the student has to be admitted to postgraduate studies. To be eligible the equivalent of the course “Cross Disciplinary Introduction to Biomaterials”, 3 higher education credits or equal qualification is required.

The course gives an overview of the different phases involved in the product development process of medical devices. Development of different types of products will be used as examples, e.g. dental implants, wound healing products, or diagnostic tools. By introduction of multidisciplinary steps of the product development process, e.g. testing of materials, product specifications, packaging & sterilization, regulatory demands, and market aspects, the students will be guided through this process.

Lectures by industry representatives, with long working experience of the specific topics, will be mixed with interactive student participitation in a progressive development of “biomaterials from ideas to market products”.

To goal of the coarse is to give the student a better understandingof the product development process required to bring biomaterials from idea to market.
